Caroline Harrison

Barrister

Caroline Harrison is a practising Barrister in the field of clinical negligence and complex personal injury law.  Her primary interests relate to medical research, the ethical, legal and social implications of human genetic research and manipulation.  She is an expert on the legal and ethical processes relating to biotechnology, especially gene therapy, and medical research.  In addition to her training as a lawyer, Caroline has been awarded a MA in Medical Law & Ethics from Kings College, London.

Caroline was a member of Gene Therapy Advisory Committee from 1998 until 2009 and the Chair of Local Research Ethics Committee for University College London Hospital NHS Trust.  She has advised about the lawfulness of the (then) proposed regulations under the 1990 HFEA, which would have permitted human cloning.  Since then she has given further ethical and legal advice on submissions to House of Lords Select Committee on stem cell technology.  In July 2001, Caroline gave oral evidence in public as expert adviser on legal and ethical issues relating to stem cell technology & cloning before the House of Lords Select Committee.
