HGC responds to Department of Health consultation on HFE Regulations

The HGC has submitted a response to the Department of Health consultation on The Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Disclosure of Information for Research Purposes) Regulations 2009. The Commission welcomes the aim of the regulations of enabling systematic research into the long-term risks and benefits of assisted reproductive treatments and technologies. At the same time, the Commission believes that before the Regulations are applied, individuals whose identifying information is held on the HFEA Register should be enabled to come forward and indicate their consent to their information being used. The Commission also stresses that the decision-making process for releasing identifying information in cases where consent could not be establised should be fully transparent.
