HGC statement on private genetic tests

The HGC has issued a statement in response to concerns raised about private genetic testing services promoted in the media. These concerns relate, in particular, to the tests’ efficacy and utility, and their implications for individuals and their families. Whilst in most cases lifestyle factors may have a greater effect on a person's health than the genetic traits identified using these tests there is a danger that the results from genetic tests may influence decisions which can have a significant impact on people's future health. For this reason the Commission cautions that tests with significant health implications should be provided in the context of proper consultation where their implications can be discussed and managed.

The Commission's statement also emphasises the ongoing relevance of conclusions reached in its 2003 report, Genes Direct, Ensuring the effective oversight of genetic tests supplied directly to the public. A report on developments since Genes Direct is due out next month.
