Exhibition visitors inform HGC discussions

A new travelling exhibition launched in Bristol will enable visitors to contribute their thoughts to HGC discussions. Over the exhibition's five-year tour, visitors will comment on issues including direct-to-public testing, genetic discrimination and DNA databases.

Inside DNA: A Genomic Revolution is a travelling exhibition that enables visitors to explore the role of genes and environment in human health, identity and evolution, and to consider the issues raised by human genetics.

We collaborated with producers of Inside DNA, launched at the end of November in Bristol, to offer visitors a voice in HGC discussions on direct-to-public testing, genetic discrimination and DNA databases.

Visitors' comments and answers to a series of questions will be collected in the exhibition's 'Dialogue Zone' and used to inform HGC discussions on these topics. Over the exhibition's five-year UK tour, questions will be added and altered to reflect HGC priorities.

Inside DNA is at Explore-At-Bristol science centre from December 2007, then travels to Newcastle in Autumn 2008 and Glasgow in Spring 2009. In addition to the main touring exhibition, smaller satellite units will tour the UK in public spaces such as shopping centres and hospitals. The exhibition is expected to attract more than a million visitors.

"We in the Human Genetics Commission are tremendously looking forward to the flow of ideas and opinions from Inside DNA," comments John Sulston, acting Chair of the Human Genetics Commission. "It's a new way of giving everyone a voice."

More information about the exhibition can be found at www.insidedna.org.uk

Funded by the Wellcome Trust, Inside DNA has been developed by At-Bristol on behalf of Ecsite-uk, with support from the Sanger Institute.
