HGC quoted in Lancet article

The HGC's concerns regarding private genetic tests are highlighted in an article in the Lancet. The article is entitled ‘Home DNA test kits cause controversy’. It is written by Priya Shetty and can be found in the 24 May 2008 edition. The full article is available at the Lancet website.

The article discusses the predictive value of home DNA test kits, which have rapidly become available to the public, the accuracy of the health information that individuals gain from these tests and if the test results actually make individuals alter their life styles. It also covers the issue that individuals with no scientific knowledge may not be able to interpret the results.

The HGC is quoted in the article as having several objections to the unregulated sale of direct-to-consumer tests and also that the HGC are calling for better consideration of how these tests are regulated. Christine Patch, a HGC commissioner is quoted as saying “that the public may be misled about the predictive value of the tests”.

The article includes comments from representatives from two high-profile DNA testing companies, which have launched in the past few years. Kari Stefánsson, the head of deCODEme and Alex Coonce at 23andMe.

The article also discusses the possible effects of a complete ban on private genetic testing in the UK and highlights that the HGC does not advocate a ban.

The HGC continues to be involved in discussions in this area and it supports the development of a voluntary code of practice.
